It was clear to Trevor that no cars had been on this road in at least a half-hour. The last car tracks had already been filled in with snow. But he could see the neon light of the service station and hoped that this was the one from which Joanna had placed her call.

He was still trying to process his feelings upon hearing her voice on the phone a little over an hour ago. It wasn’t the anxiety in her voice which had grabbed Trevor’s attention. It was the need. Joanna was by herself in an unexpected storm, and she was a little scared. But she had acted quickly to get help. She had called him.

Trevor was a bit stunned. He couldn’t remember the last time anything so simple had made him feel so good. A phone call. He didn’t doubt that Joanna knew a dozen people she might have called, including her boyfriend. Trevor had spent the entire time on the road trying to figure out what her call meant. He quickly cursed himself for a fool for thinking it could possibly mean anything.

Then he saw the Honda Civic with the flashing caution lights, sitting deserted and nearly buried under snow. Trevor pulled up slowly behind it and put his car into neutral. As he opened his door to get out, Trevor stubbornly stuck to his own version of the facts. Joanna had probably called him because she didn’t want to trouble anyone else. He was unwilling to admit he was afraid to believe anything else.

Joanna heard the car door slam, and her heart lurched in her chest. She swiveled her head and could only see the blur of the headlights reflected through the snow-covered rear window. She jumped when someone slapped their hand on the roof of her car. Joanna sat still for a second longer, and then rolled down her window a fraction of an inch. She saw Trevor squinting against the snow at her, his face hidden and protected by the beak of his cap. Tension discharged and flowed quickly out of her.

“Trevor,” she murmured in relief.

She hastily got the car door open and stepped out into a drift of snow almost to her knees. But Joanna only looked at Trevor, as if he were an apparition.

She tried to step toward him. He reached out to aid her as she stumbled forward. Joanna grinned at Trevor, but his expression seemed tight and closed. His hands closed around her arms. When Joanna looked into his face, a surge of warmth flowed through her. He was so sturdy and his presence seemed so invincible that she felt immediately safe.

But there was something else as well. A sense of letting go of her breath. Of letting go of speculation. Of questions answered that hadn’t even been voiced. Trevor gently hauled her toward him and closed his arms about Joanna. She hugged him in return, and it seemed so easy and felt so natural. Just for a brief few moments. Silently.
